Addis Ababa, March 24, 2025 (FMC) — The Koysha Hydropower Dam project is being developed to address the social and economic needs of communities residing along the borders of the Southwest Ethiopia People’s Regional State and the South Ethiopia Regional State, according to regional government communications.
The announcement followed a visit to the project site by Chief Government Whip at the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Tesfaye Beljige, along with other senior government officials.
During the visit, officials disclosed that construction progress has reached 65 percent, with ongoing efforts to ensure the project is completed on schedule.
The dam, which is being built at a cost of 2.5 billion euros, spans across Konta Koysha Woreda in the Konta Zone of the Southwest Ethiopia People’s Region and Melo Koza Woreda in the Gofa Zone of the South Ethiopia Regional State.
Authorities emphasized that beyond addressing energy demands, the project is expected to foster socio-economic ties between the two regions.
Furthermore, information from the Gofa Zone Communication Department highlights that the surrounding environment will be preserved and afforested, enhancing its appeal for visitors.
