John Pombe Magufuli Bridge on Lake Victoria in Tanzania to open soon

Addis Ababa, January 26, 2025 (FMC) – The John Pombe Magufuli Bridge on Lake Victoria in Tanzania, now 96.4% complete, is expected to open soon, the country’s ministry said.

The bridge will significantly reduce travel time across the Kigongo-Busisi stretch from two hours to just 5-15 minutes, benefiting residents of the Lake Zone and neighboring countries.

“The completion is imminent, and we expect the bridge to be in use by the end of February or early March, as directed by President Hassan,” said Abdallah Ulega, the Works Minister, adding that an additional $6,282 was allocated to ensure a swift completion.

Named in honor of the late President John Magufuli, who initiated the project, the bridge will be the longest in East and Central Africa when completed, according to Sputnik Africa. The project was 25% complete at the time of his passing, making it a testament to his legacy.
