Incheon, September 19, 2023 (FBC) – International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) has hosted Women’s Peace Conference 2023 under the theme “The Multidimensional Role of Women for Sustainable Peace” in Incheon, Republic of Korea in participation of first ladies of various countries, peace leaders and representatives of women associations from all corners of the world.
The conference which has been held as part of the 9th Anniversary of the September 18th World Peace Summit is intended to explore ways of strengthening women’s role towards ensuring peace in each of their positions in the society.
The Conference was mainly focused on peace education, a culture of peace and institutionalization of peace in which women are expected to play the major role.
In her opening remarks, Chairwoman of IWPG, Yoon Hyun-sook, explained about the adverse effects of conflicts on human beings and properties, calling for concerted efforts to establish sustainable peace all around the world.
“IWPG is united with women worldwide in a multifaceted manner to achieve peace that the world needs,” She said.
“No nation can be free of a threat of war. Therefore, we must make every possible effort to mobilize all the mechanisms to prevent war and secure peace as soon as possible. IWPG is implementing multidimensional peace projects all over the world in this regard,” the Chairwoman stated.
First Lady of Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, Maria de Fatima Afonso Vila Nova, indicated that women and children are the major victims of conflicts, citing war as a factor for poverty and hunger in many countries.
She called on women to play their active role as a guardian of peace by preventing violence and insecurity.
Aya Benjamin Libo Warille, Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare of South Sudan, emphasized the necessity and urgency of sustainable peace, mentioning the situation in her country as an example of how war is destructive.
Dr. Kadia Maiga Diallo, Secretary General of the Malian National Commission for UNESCO and Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCOP, explained about the importance and opportunity of women’s peace education.
Dr. Ahlam Beydoun, Former Professor at the Faculty of Law, Political and Administrative Sciences, Lebanese University, Beirut, evaluated the limitations of the international law surfaced by the current global affairs, calling for efforts to address the challenges.
Finally, IWPG announced appointment of its Advisories and Publicity Ambassadors and bestowed the Peace Achievement Award on Lalji Balghis (India), Vinutthaput Phophet (Thailand) and Wanja Cheon (Republic of Korea).
