Addis Ababa, February 7, 2024 (FBC) – The International Organization for Migration (IOM), also known as the UN Migration Agency, affirmed its support to Ethiopia in achieving better migration governance.
Ms. Huria Ali, Minister of State for Social Affairs at the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs of Ethiopia, engaged in a discussion with Ambassador Katharina Stasch, the Chairwoman of the IOM Council.
During the conversation, Ms. Huria Ali underscored the circumstances wherein returning migrants have been provided with requisite assistance, undergoing a process of reintegration. Additionally, she emphasized collaborative initiatives with the UN Migration Agency and other various international organizations.
The State Minister expressed gratitude to IOM for its assistance to vulnerable returnees, indicating an interest in further strengthening collaboration on reintegration initiatives.
She asserted that Ethiopia is making effective strides in averting irregular migration, safeguarding and reintegrating returning migrants.
Ms. Huria also highlighted the Ministry’s extensive efforts to address conditions that could alleviate the humanitarian crisis caused by irregular migration in Ethiopia and the broader Horn of Africa.
For her part, Ambassador Katharina Stasch expressed appreciation for Ethiopia’s endeavors in preventing irregular migration and supporting the reintegration and resettlement of migration victims.
She assured the UN Migration Agency’s backing to Ethiopia in achieving better migration management and building the capacity of women.
The Chairwoman of the IOM Council, Ambassador Katharina Stasch is in Ethiopia for a 3-day visit during which she is holding meetings with IOM, government, UN, AU, donors as well as development partners in addition to observing IOM’s operations, response, and delivery.
