Addis Ababa, July 1, 2021 (FBC) – In a weekly press briefing, the Spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dina Mufti told journalists that the decission made by the government of Ethiopia to declare unilateral ceasefire in Tigray region.
He said the federal government has achieved the goals attached to the law enforcement operation took place in the region.
Saying that the law enforcement measure was aimed to recapture the military gadgets in the regoin and set the army detained by the rebels in the region, the Spokesperson said both objectives have been fully achieved. Ambassador Dina said the federal government is committed to maintain cessation of hostilities in the region.
Spokesperson disclosed that several countries and organizations that were eskeptic are now showing positive attitude towards Ethoipia related to the ceasefire. “There will not be a threat of sanction and related pressure here on over the situation in the Tigray region.” he said.
The unilatera ceasefire also gives an opportunity to the farmers of the region to undertake crop farming and other agricultural practices without any security threat, the Spokesperson added.
There are now positive international reactions about the ceasefire, he said adding that the African Union (AU) and United Nation (UN) and countries including the UK, China, Russia, UAE, Sweeden among others, have issued statement appreciating the unitary ceasefire.
Regarding GERD, the spokesperson said Ethiopia has repeatedly rejected the position of Egypt and Sudan in bringing the issue to the United Nations Security Council. He reiterated the unwavering position of Ethiopia on the AU-led negotiations on GERD.
Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen, in his conversation with outgoing Jordan Ambassador to Ethiopia, expressed Ethiopia’s discontent on the misguided and biased approach of the Arab League in the GERD issue.
On the other hand, he said that IGAD council of ministers appreciate the orderly and deocratic election process in ethiopia and Djibouti and uganda as well.
Ethiopia has repatriated 9,902 nationals from Saudi Arabia during the last week with 35 charter flights, said the spokesperson, calling the media and the coummnity at large to play share in addressing humantraffiking and illegal migration to any country.
Ethiopia is proud and committed to continue repatriating compatriots from Saudi Arabia and other countries.
