IGAD reiterates support to Sudanese women’s efforts to promote peace in their country

Addis Ababa, October 19, 2023 (FBC) – Executive Secretary of IGAD (the Intergovernmental Authority on Development), Workneh Gebeyehu, reiterated the bloc’s unwavering support to Sudanese women in the bid to promote peace in their country.

The IGAD head made the pledge at the ‘Enhancing Women’s Leadership in Promoting Sustainable Peace in Sudan’ conference today.

“Their remarkable strength and resilience is truly inspiring,” Workneh said in a social media post. According to him, these women are the “true peace catalysts”.

He also called for an immediate, inclusive, and coordinated action to address their urgent priorities.

Organized in partnership with African Union and UN Women Africa, UN Women Sudan, Women’s International Peace Centre, and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the conference aims to influence the peace process and support coalition building for sustainable peace in Sudan.
