IGAD, EU sign financial agreement to address a spectrum of issues in HoA

Addis Ababa, February 27, 2024 (FBC) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the European Union (EU) signed a Financing Agreement to support the regional bloc’s efforts in addressing a spectrum of issues in the Horn of Africa, including natural disasters, humanitarian crises, and peace and security challenges.

Mohamed Abdi Ware, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, and Sylvie Tabesse, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Djibouti and IGAD signed a 4 million euros Financing Agreement. The agreement is expected to enhance the EU-IGAD partnership.

In a official press release, IGAD noted that this financial support highlights the EU’s acknowledgment of IGAD’s important role in promoting regional development and peace in the Horn of Africa.

It is stated that the funds will fortify IGAD’s efforts in addressing a spectrum of issues in the region, including natural disasters, humanitarian crises, and peace and security challenges. The agreement mirrors a shared commitment to stability, security, and development in the IGAD region.

According to IGAD, this Financing Agreement symbolizes the EU’s trust in IGAD’s capacity to drive positive change, reflecting their belief that supporting IGAD is an investment in a more peaceful and prosperous Horn of Africa.
