Addis Ababa, October 18, 2021 (FBC) – Eben District Chief Administrator in West Arsi, Dagnu Warritu, discloses that cannabis plantation has been discovered in farms in Buko Wolda kebele of the district.
The seizure of this narcotic plant was possible with sudden searches made into the suspected areas based on information from residents, having a concern over its cultivation.
The administration also seized this narcotic plant loaded on three trucks.
District Police head Abu Teshite said that while four suspects were arrested, searches are underway to bring before law others who might have partaken in the crime.
Documents show that selling cannabis in Ethiopia results in penalties ranging from five to ten years in prison, plus a fine up to 100, 000 Birr, though its revenue potential in the country is valued at 10 USD.
Cannabis since ancient times is said to be used in Ethiopia for medicinal purposes.
