Guzara Castle Renovation project underway at a cost of 35 million birr

Addis Ababa, July 19, 2023 (FBC) – One of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Ethiopia, Guzara Castle is undergoing a renovation project worth 35 million birr, Central Gondar Zone Culture and Tourism Department announced.

The Guzara Castle, a beautiful and impressive historic landmark built in sixteenth century, is facing risk of ruin due to lack of renovation and restoration and preservation measures for decades.

Renovation works are particularly carried on the doors, windows, floor and roofs of the centuries old attraction, preserving all the historic attributes of the heritage, the department indicated.

More than 100 community members are participating in the renovation works which are also said vital in creating favorable condition for foreign tourists besides enabling local administration to properly preserve the site.

The renovation works at the Castle are expected to be completed within a year, it was indicated.

Built by Emperor Sertse Dingil in 1572 and located in Gondar Zuria Woreda, Guzara Castle has 18 meters height and 12 meters width.
