Addis Ababa, May 21, 2024 – The Green Legacy Initiative, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s flagship initiative, has been receiving overwhelming response for its holistic approach to environmental restoration and socioeconomic development through job creation and food security.
Just like other parts of the world, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan has also collaborated with the Embassy of Ethiopia for the launch of such a landmark initiative.
During this month, the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad along with other stakeholders in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan including the Ministry of Climate Change, business community, academia, universities, civil society and media.
A massive plantation was carried out as a part of a green drive titled Ethio-Pakistan Fraternity under the Green Legacy across all the major cities of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan including Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura and others.
Special parks and enclaves are dedicated to sow the seeds of different plants to foster fraternity and brotherhood between the two nations.
The Green Legacy Initiative is a brainchild of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to address climate issues, preserve environment, create job opportunities and ensure food security in Ethiopia.
The initiative gets overwhelming response in Ethiopia, neighbouring countries as well as international level. Some of neighbouring countries of Ethiopia such as Djibouti and Kenya followed the initiative and started massive plantation in their country to protect the African continent from the negative impacts of climate change.
The Green Legacy Initiative was launched in 2019 and as many as 25 billion seedlings planted under its 1st phase by mobilizing over 32 million people and a target of planting another 25 billion seedlings during the 2nd phase, which was launched on 17 July 2023.
So far, over 32.5 billion plants have been planted in Ethiopia under the Green Legacy Initiative which has so far created more than 1million jobs and the numbers of nurseries increased to 145,000 in Ethiopia.
Trees, Fruits, and Cattle Feeds’ seedlings are being planted mainly under the Green Legacy Initiative not only to restore green cover but also to create jobs and ensure food security in Ethiopia which is currently exporting fruits such as Avocado, papaya, mango in the region, thanks to the Green Legacy Initiative.
