Addis Ababa, April 15, 2024 (FBC) – Huawei Ethiopia organized Green Energy Summit 2024 under the theme “Together for the Greener Ethiopia” in Addis Ababa.
At the event, new green energy technology services were also launched. Furthermore, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) to carry out a strategic partnership on digital transformation, corporate culture, green energy, and management collaboration.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Liu Jifan, CEO of Huawei Ethiopia, stated that “in the last few years, many African countries, including Ethiopia, have taken amazing initiatives towards environmental challenges.”
He remarked, “In recent decades, the instability of the electricity system and the significant rise in oil costs in Africa have provided new prospects for solar energy solutions. We are committed to making Ethiopia a greener place with our power electronics and ICT technology.”
The CEO explained that Huawei uses its 36 years of experience and global business cooperation to guide its customers and partners through emerging development possibilities. The company’s goal is to contribute to a bright future for solar energy and work with the entire ecosystem to build a better, more sustainable world, he explained.
Ethio – Telecom Chief Technology Officer Mr. Tariku Demissie, in his speech entitled “Leverage Technology for Sustainable, Green Development,” said that Ethiopia has vast renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower.
The Ethiopian government has recognized the potential of these resources and has set ambitious goals for renewable energy generation, he added.
Tariku pointed out that green energy is not only a source but also requires efficient energy utilization and management systems.
On the occasion, a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Huawei Digital Power and Ethiopian Electricity Utility (EEU) to promote cooperation and capacity building in the sustainable energy sector.
The CEOs of the two companies, Mr. Liu Jifan of Huawei Ethiopia and Mr. Shiferaw Telila of Ethiopian Electricity Utility, signed the Memorandum of Understanding.
The primary objective of this strategic collaboration is to cooperate on the development and implementation of sustainable energy solutions, with a focus on capacity-building initiatives.
The collaboration was intended to enable communities situated far from the main grid to benefit from off-grid alternative electricity services, EV charging stations for electric vehicles, and sophisticated technologies to improve facility operations.
The summit brought together government officials from Ethiopian Electric Utility, Ethiopian Electric Power, Petroleum and Energy Authority alongside private sector actors and facilitated a “Green Energy Dialogue” session to discuss the challenges and opportunities of EV charging and green energy adoption in Ethiopia, providing a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration in the green energy, data center facilities, critical power, and EV charging industries.
The Green Energy Summit also brought together decision-makers from public and private organizations interested in the implementation of renewable energy in Ethiopia.
