Addis Ababa, July 1, 2024 (FBC) – High ranking government officials have accorded a warm welcome to members of the second generation Ethiopian Diaspora who are returning to their origin country from different countries across the world.
Recall that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed extended a homecoming call to the second-generation Ethiopian diaspora late last year, which is being executed in three stages between December 2023 and September 2024. Each phase focuses on a distinct thematic area that complements the overarching theme, “Back to You Origins.”
The third phase, “Leave Your Legacy, Savor Your Holiday,” aims to involve second-generation Diasporas in the national volunteerism initiative. Participants can participate in the green legacy program, assist those in need by building houses, make donations to vulnerable communities, and share their experiences with Ethiopians at home while enjoying their vacations.
Accordingly, the members of the second generation Ethiopian Diaspora who came to the country in two previous rounds have visited different areas of the nation.
In that regard, the third round arrivals have also started to enter the country for the same purpose from different countries across the world.
Upon their arrival at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, members of the second diaspora were greeted by senior government officials, including Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Birtukan Ayano.
It is expected that the second generation Ethiopians will visit development works and tourism centers in various areas during their stay in the country of their origin.
Recently, Ambassador Nasise Chali, chairwoman of the National Committee for the Call of Second Generation Ethiopians and of Tourism, disclosed that members of the second generation Diaspora are also expected to participate in this year’s Green Legacy tree planting activities and charity activities to leave their lasting mark.
She stated that the third round of homecoming is set to take place from the onset of the Ethiopian rainy season until September 30, 2024.
The Tourism Minister highlighted that the third phase of the second-generation Ethiopian Diasporas’ homecoming seeks to reconnect them with their culture and history, while also encouraging their participation in charity activities.
