Addis Ababa, October 10, 2024 (FBC) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that ensuring the safety of its citizens is a top priority for the government in light of the ongoing crisis in Lebanon.
In a recent statement, spokesperson Ambassador Nebiat Getachew emphasized the government’s commitment to citizen-oriented diplomacy aimed at protecting Ethiopians in the region.
So far, a technical and national committee established in response to the crisis has facilitated the return of 51 citizens, while approximately 3,000 others have expressed a desire to return and are currently registered for repatriation.
Ambassador Nebiat noted that the registration process is ongoing, with options available for citizens to register in person, by phone, or online. However, he highlighted that participation in the registration has not met expectations, urging citizens who wish to return to take advantage of the available avenues.
Efforts are also underway to relocate citizens to more stable areas within Lebanon. A delegation of leaders has been dispatched to enhance these safety measures and support the swift protection of Ethiopian nationals.
In addition, the Ethiopian government has recently received recognition on the international stage, being elected for a third term on the United Nations Human Rights Council. The Ethiopian delegation effectively participated in the 79th UN General Assembly, where they engaged with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and key officials from both permanent and alternate Security Council member states, advocating for the interests of Ethiopia and African nations.
