Addis Ababa, January 4, 2025 (FMC) – The Government Communication Service (GCS) stated that the Government has begun assessing the extent of damage in areas impacted by recent earthquakes, deploying emergency personnel from multiple sectors.
The GCS reported that a series of earthquakes with increasing intensity have been striking various areas in Afar, Oromia, and Amhara regional states. Notably, an earthquake registering 5.8 on the Richter scale was recorded this week.
Monitoring the situation closely, the Government has mobilized experts to identify the epicenters of the seismic activity and sent emergency teams to 12 kebeles to evaluate damage. The government is also prioritizing the identification of vulnerable populations and organizing evacuations as needed.
Additionally, the Government is tracking potential effects on social services, economic institutions, and infrastructure. While major urban areas have not yet experienced significant disruptions, officials are urging citizens to adhere to safety guidelines issued by experts.
The government reassured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates through relevant channels.
