Addis Ababa, December 17, 2022 (FBC) – The Government Communication Service reiterated that the government will continue to expedite inclusive activities to make the Pretoria Peace Agreement successful.
In a weekly press briefing, State Minister of the Government Communication Service, Selamawit Kassa, stated that all parties should fulfill their responsibilities to ensure that the peace agreement is implemented in accordance with the directives set.
The people of Tigray are inhaling breath of peace since the signing of the peace agreement, said Selamawit, calling all parties to adhere to the terms of the accord.
She also explained that the government is working hard to implement the terms of the agreement in the northern part of the country.
The government is delivering humanitarian assistance to the Tigray region by land and air transport as per the agreement reached, he said.
Selamawit indicated that the humanitarian support is being provided to Tigray region via Afar Ab’ala, Gondar – Mai Tsemri – Shire and Kombolcha – Kobo – Alamata lines.
Till December 14, more than 93,000MT of food, over 8,000MT of non-food supplies and more than 833,000 liters of fuel have entered Tigray, according to the State Minister.
Moreover, 158MT of medicines have been sent to the region with support of partners, and 588 billion birr have been sent for business operation in the region.
She said that 29 partner organizations have participated in the humanitarian assistance operation.
Apart from the humanitarian assistance, Selamawit stated that inspection and maintenance works have been carried out on 85pct of electric infrastructures in the region, she stated.
Selamawit explained that 8 power substations including the Mekele distribution station have been reconnected to the national grid, she said.
She also mentioned that repair and maintenance works will be completed and electric series fully be restored in all parts of Tigray with in the coming two months.
In relation to telecom, he pointed out that 65 telecom stations have been put into operation, and network installation works have been completed to restart banking service in 8 towns in the region.
Regarding the restoration and reconstruction of infrastructures, Selamawit disclosed that 6 bridges that were repaired recently have started services. She added tha preparations are underway to reinstate more than 2,200 health professionals to their posts in Axum, Adwa and Shire towns.
She also indicated that supply of basic goods has also been started in selected areas with reasonable prices.
In addition to the humanitarian support provided to Tigray region, efforts are underway to enable 54 districts in Amhara region and 21 districts in Afar benefit from a Safety Net programme, the State Minister added.
