Germany affirms support to strengthen social protection system in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, December 3, 2017 (FMC) – Germany affirmed that it will cooperate with Ethiopia to ensure the benefits of women and youth as well as to strengthen the social protection system in the country.

Germany’s commitment was disclosed after a discussion between Ethiopia’s Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Ergogie Tesfaye, and Ambassador for Feminist Foreign Policy & Director for Human Rights and Global Health in the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, Gesa Bräutigam, and the Ambassador of Germany to Ethiopia, Jens Hanefeld, on areas of cooperation.

It is stated that the discussion aims to deliberate on women’s rights and ways to increase their role and participation in peace and security, national dialogue and transitional justice process.

According to information from the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, the officials also advised on gender equality, empowering women and youth, and strengthening the social protection system.

During the discussion, Ergogie underscored that Ethiopian women have an important role in the process of national consultation and transitional justice, and extensive work is being done to increase their participation across all domains.

She also highlighted concerted efforts being done in collaboration with stakeholders on the protection of women’s rights.

In that regard, Ergogie called on the German government to support Ethiopia’s efforts on empowering women economically.

For her par part, Gesa Bräutigam appreciated the activities of the Ethiopian government to ensure the inclusive engagement of women across all fronts.

She confirmed that her country will support Ethiopia’s strides in empowering women and youth and strengthen the social protection system.
