GERD is central to Ethiopia’s economic dev’t undertakings: Expert

Addis Ababa, September 20, 2023 (FBC) – The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) electric power plant will not only buttress the economic and social capacity of the country, but also make it more prominent in the political sphere, said the former member of GERD negotiating team, Feqahmed Negash.

In a recent exclusive interview with Fana Broadcasting Corporate, Feqahmed Negash highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the 4th round water filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam reservoir.

Reminding the fact that about 85 percent of the water that flows into the Nile River comes from the Ethiopian highlands through the Blue Nile, the former member of GERD negotiating team underlined that this fact gives Ethiopia the right to cooperate, negotiate and make decisions along with other countries.

Also a senior expert of the sector in Ethiopia, Feqahmed said that the commencement of power generation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will play a principal role in boosting the country’s economy.

He mentioned that the business and industry sector will be invigorated through the country’s prospect of sufficient electric power supply. From the outlook of the social benefit of the GERD, Feqahmed believes that challenges and shortcomings of services in various sectors due to shortage of power supply will be resolved.

A convenient environment will be created to draw and distribute clean drinking water through electric power and to boost activities of night education in the country, he pointed out.

To advance the agriculture sector, the dam will also ease the activities through access of sufficient power supply for irrigation development, explains Feqahmed Negash.

The former member of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam negotiating team added that beyond domestic consumptions, the dam will have a paramount importance in supplying electric power to neighboring countries.
