Addis Ababa, June 20, 2024 (FBC) – China’s prominent automotive manufacturer, Foton Motor Group, has expressed a keen interest in participating in the supply of electric vehicles in Ethiopia.
This announcement was made following a meeting between Minister of State for Transport and Logistics, Mr. Denge Boru, and a delegation from Foton Motor Group, led by the CEO of the company Rui Chang.
During the meeting, Mr. Denge emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to reducing air pollution by expanding the availability of electric cars. Additionally, the country is actively engaged in the Green Legacy Initiative, which aims to prevent climate change by planting billions of tree saplings every year.
During the meeting, the Minister of State welcomed Foton Motor’s enthusiasm for participating in Ethiopia’s electric vehicle sector. He highlighted the tax incentives provided to encourage the growth of the electric cars industry and explained that by collaborating with the group, importing electric cars, and assembling them in Ethiopia, it would create a substantial market demand.
Mr. Denge further noted that the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is nearing completion, which will create more favorable conditions for the supply of electric power.
On his part, Rui Chang, CEO of Foton Motors Group, inquired about the possible conditions in terms of policy and national strategy for participating in the electric car marketing sector in Ethiopia. In response, the State Minister provided an explanation of the opportunities available to the group.
Chang highlighted that Foton Motors Group specializes in producing energy-efficient and pollution-free cars in the transportation sector and has made significant contributions in the field of science and technology research.
It is stated that Foton Motor Group, a state-owned company, is said to be a subsidiary of Beijing Automotive Group Co. Ltd. and specializes in the design and manufacturing of trucks, buses, and sport utility vehicles.
