FM emphasizes critical role of nat’l dialogue in overcoming Ethiopia’s current challenges

Addis Ababa, December 31, 2024 (FMC) — The national dialogue plays critical role in overcoming Ethiopia’s current challenges, Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos said.

During an interview he held with Prime Minister’s Office Press Secretary Billene Seyoum with regard to tackling political and social challenges through sustainable solutions, the minister underscored the need for a deliberative process where citizens can persuade and convince one another to arrive at a shared social contract for the nation.

The National Dialogue Commission, he noted, is designed to be an open platform where the public can directly articulate their concerns and aspirations for the future of Ethiopia.

Gedion pointed out the inclusive nature of the current process, allowing for broad participation from ordinary citizens, which is a departure from traditional approaches that often prioritize elite-driven solutions.

There is a new generation that is entitled to a participatory process in which there is grassroots participation, he emphasized.

Looking ahead, the minister expressed hope for a future where Ethiopians reach consensus on their national identity and build a strong and inclusive nation, as called by ENA.

The minister envisioned a country with robust institutions, a lasting social contract, and opportunities for all citizens.

Ethiopia’s unique historical trajectory, marked by indigenous state formation but lacking a strong foundational social contract, has contributed to its current political struggles, Gideon said, adding that the national dialogue process aims to address this.

He finally noted that achieving sustainable peace requires addressing historical grievances and fostering a culture of dialogue and compromise.
