Flood damages over 11, 000 hct of sugarcane, cotton in Afar

Addis Ababa, September 8, 2020 (FBC) –Flood resulted from the overflow of Awash River has damaged more than 11, 000 hectares of sugarcane, cotton and other crops in Afar regional state.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture visited the damage caused in Amibara woreda (district), one of the worst flood-affected areas due to heavy rainfall this season.

State Minister of Agriculture, Dr Mandefro Niguse, said the aim of the visit was to see the extent of the damage and address the problem in cooperation with relevant stakeholders.

It was also intended to identify problems that require short and medium-term plans as well as work with stakeholders to provide flood-affected people with the necessary humanitarian assistance.

According to the National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) of Ethiopia, floods resulted from heavy rainfall about 600,000.
