Addis Ababa, February 8, 2024 (FBC) – Team Europe delegation, led by Caroline Gennez, Minister of Development Cooperation of Belgium and Stella Kyriakides, EU Commissioner of Health & Food Security, including Ministers, Ambassadors and high-level delegates from ten member states, visited the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) yesterday.
The meeting and visit was joined by Jean Kaseya, Director-General of Africa CDC, and WHO –World Health Organization colleagues from the Geneva HQ and the country office in Ethiopia.
The meeting deliberated on achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through primary health care, local manufacturing, using evidence for strengthening health systems and current priorities and challenges.
The dialogue also emphasized fostering collaborations between Ethiopia, Africa, and Europe to tackle shared health challenges and had comprehensive tour of the AHRI research laboratories. We extend our gratitude to Team Europe for their visit and strong collaboration.
Furthermore, European Union Commissioner for Health and Food Security, Dr. Stella Kyriakides, accompanied by the outgoing Health Minister of Ethiopia Dr Lia Taddese, also visited the Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, one of the hospitals supported by the Joint Health Initiative implemented by EU countries.
On the occasion, Dr. Lia Tadesse thanked the European Union and its member countries for the support they are providing to support Ethiopia’s health sector. She believes that the visit of EU delegation will strengthen the cooperation between Ethiopia and the European Union member states and that the countries will continue to work together.
Dr. Lia stated that the Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital is a pioneer in producing specialist doctors needed to treat the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases. She added that the hospital is currently providing many subspecialties that are not provided at other hospitals.
