Ethiopia’s young athletes tipped to excel at World Athletics U20 Championship

Addis Ababa, August 27, 2024 (FBC) – Medina Eisa and Mekdes Alemshet, two of Ethiopia’s most promising young athletes, are expected to excel in the women’s 5000m final at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2024, which is scheduled to take place on August 27th at 1:25 p.m.

Ethiopia’s youthful athletics delegation travelled to Lima, Peru, ahead of the World Athletics U20 Championships 2024 which will be held from August 28 to September 1. A total of 20 Ethiopian athletes, consisting of 11 women and 9 men, will represent the country in 6 competitions at the 20th edition of the global age-group showpiece.

Accordingly, the men’s and women’s 5000m final will be held later tonight in the Peruvian capital.

The women’s 5000m final is set to feature two Ethiopian youngsters Medina Eisa and Mekdes Alemshet. Ethiopia’s Nibret Kinde and Abdisa Feyisa are also tipped for glory in the men’s 5000m final, which will follow 30 minutes after the women’s final.

In addition to the finals, Ethiopian athletes will also participate in qualifying events. Aster Arere will represent Ethiopia in the women’s 800m heats, while General Berhanu will compete in the men’s 800m heats.

Furthermore, in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase heats, athletes Simbo Alemayehu and Frehiwot Gessesse from Ethiopia will compete in different heats.

World athletics disclosed that a record number of 1700 athletes from more than 130 teams are preparing to compete at the World Athletics U20 Championships Lima 24, the 20th edition of the global age-group showpiece.

While many athletes will be making their international debut in Lima, for some the path to Peru has gone via Paris.

The World Athletics U20 Championships 2024 promises to be an exciting event, bringing together the world’s best young athletes to compete in various track and field events. With a record number of athletes participating, this edition of the championships is sure to be a memorable one for Ethiopia and its passionate athletics fans.
