Ethiopia’s Pharmaceutical Sector Garners US$1.5B Income Annually, Says Minister

Addis Ababa, September 4, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopia’s Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba underscored the substantial financial prospects inherent within the nation’s burgeoning pharmaceutical sector.

The health minister said this while addressing the Ethiopia-China High-Level Business Forum, convened in Beijing on the margins of the ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, earlier today.

Dr. Mekdes asserted that strategic investment in this sector could yield in excess of US$1.5 billion annually.

Elaborating further, the minister elucidated upon the diverse investment opportunities available within Ethiopia’s healthcare ecosystem.

She delineated six key domains within the healthcare sector earmarked for strategic development, highlighting ongoing endeavors to establish robust infrastructure conducive to attracting prospective investors.

These prioritized domains encompass tertiary healthcare provision, advanced diagnostic services, domestic manufacturing of essential medical supplies, comprehensive human resource development within the healthcare sector, enhancement of early emergency medical services, and fostering innovation within health technology.

Furthermore, Minister Mekdes affirmed the Ethiopian government’s commitment to fostering a favorable investment climate within the healthcare sector.

Mekdes further revealed ongoing endeavors to cultivate a secure and transparent market environment within the healthcare sector. According to her, this will be achieved through the implementation of a robust and comprehensive regulatory framework.
