Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative experience receives plaudits at AMCEN conference

Addis Ababa, August 18, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia has shared its Green Legacy Intiative experience and progress made at the 19th ordinary session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN).

The nineteenth session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) is being held from 14 to 18 August 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia under the theme “Seizing Opportunities and Enhancing Collaboration to Address Environmental Challenges in Africa”.

Addressing the event, Adefres Worku, Head of the Green Legacy tree seedlings planting technical committee, has presented Ethiopia’s experience entitled “Step towards Building Circular Economy in Africa”.

Adefres highlighted the driving factors for the Green Legacy Initiative, stating that Ethiopia has been engaging to plant twenty two billion seedlings from 2019 to 2022 and managed to plant more than 25 billion seedlings of various purposes.

He also explained that, based on the experience of the frist phase of plantation, the nation has embarked upon planting new 25billion seedlings which will double the country’s efforts to 50 billion by 2026.

It is mentioned that the achievement of GLI has various implications for Ethiopia that ranges from natural land restoration to food security and from ecosystem protection to climate change adaptation and mitigation in the bid to build green economy.

The officials called upon the African ministers to join in scaling out Ethiopia’s nature-based solution to fight climate change which was unanimously welcomed.
