Ethiopia’s Biniam Mehary smashes world U20 10,000m record

Addis Ababa, June 15, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopian young athlete Biniam Mehary smashed the world under-20 10,000m record at the Ethiopian Trials in Nerja, Spain, on Friday (14), World Athletics confirmed.

The youngster has clocked a time of 26:37.93 to register the new record for the under-20 category. This world record is only subject to the usual ratification procedures, the world athletics sport governing body disclosed.

Surprisingly, Biniam Mehary did not even make it onto the podium. His compatriots Yomif Kejelcha (26:31.01), Berihu Aregawi (26:31.13), and Selemon Barega (26:34.93) have claimed the top three spots, respectively.

World Athletics further confirmed that Yomif Kejelcha’s time of 26:31.01 is a world lead for elite men 10000m so far this year.
