Ethiopians working to make lasting peace a reality: UN Representative

Addis Ababa, November 2, 2023 (FBC) – The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Ramiz Alakbarov reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to support Ethiopia’s undertakings to establish lasting peace in the country.

While speaking to the UN News Service, he called for partnership and resources to address roots of humanitarian needs, support to the country’s efforts on recovery and reconstruction, DDR (Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration) of ex-combatants, transitional justice and national dialogue.

Ramiz Alakbarov said citizens across Ethiopia have voiced support for the 2022 peace agreement that ended two years of conflict in northern Ethiopia.

The recent conflict in Ethiopia can often make people forget about the country’s vibrancy, robust economic growth and burgeoning young population, according to the top UN official there, he underscored.

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator also highlighted the humanitarian response to assist more than 17 million people, including refugees, and the need for cutting-edge policies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
