Ethiopian youths are showcasing their talents at the 47th world skills competition in Lyon

Addis Ababa, September 12, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopia’s gifted youth are showcasing their talents at the 47th World Skills Competition, which was officially inaugurated by French President Emmanuel Macron in Lyon on Tuesday.

The competition has drawn 1,400 competitors from 69 countries and regions and is expected to attract 250,000 attendees, encompassing participants, ceremony goers, and city-wide events. This prestigious event promotes excellence in over 60 skills, underscoring their diversity and contribution to the global economy.

Running until September 15, the World Skills Competition—often dubbed the “Olympics of Skills”—is the largest vocational education and skills event in the world, highlighting exceptional talent across various trades.

Ethiopian youth are actively participating in this global gathering, competing in skills such as ICT and Networking, CNC Machining, and Furniture Making, as stated by the Minister of Labor and Skills, Muferihat Kamil.

Max Roche, President of WorldSkills Lyon 2024, emphasized the organization’s four core values: excellence, generosity, openness, and unity. He remarked, “We believe that everything is possible with skills. This competition is centered around sharing—sharing skills, knowledge, happiness, and success. We aim to welcome everyone, regardless of their background.”

Ethiopia officially became a full member of World Skills International last August, which brings significant economic and social benefits to the country and its youth through skill development, experience exchange, and industry connections. ENA
