Ethiopian Women Parliamentary Caucus meets with South African counterpart

Addis Ababa, June 7, 2023 (FBC) – Representatives of the House of Peoples Representatives of Ethiopia and Women Parliamentary Caucus are currently in Cape Town, South Africa, from 5-7 June 2023 to share experiences with the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, according to the Ethiopian Embassy in Pretoria.

The Ethiopian delegation, led by Ms. Lomi Bedo, Deputy Speaker of the HoPR and overseer of the Women Parliamentary Caucus, aims to learn from the extensive experience of South African parliamentary leaders, the Embassy said.

It is stated that the delegation engaged with various leaders of the South African Parliament to gain insight into the structure and working procedures, responsibilities, matters pertaining to Parliamentary Committees, gender equality and women’s representation in parliament.

The Embassy also indicated that the Ethiopian delegation is scheduled to meet with the South African Parliament Multi-Party Women’s Caucus to gain insights into their efforts to ensure that the South African parliament fulfills its mandate in a gender-responsive manner.

It is learned that the Embassy of Ethiopia in Pretoria facilitated this experience sharing, while the UN Women Ethiopia Office supported the mission. This exchange of best practices and lessons learned is also expected to accelerate progress towards achieving SDG No. 5.
