Addis Ababa, December 16, 2024 (FMC) – The Ethiopian Federal Police Commission and Rwanda National Police today signed a memorandum of understanding to work jointly in improving collaboration in capacity building, intelligence sharing, combating transnational crimes, and advancing technological capabilities.
The MoU, according to the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission, also aims to foster police-to-police relations and cooperation between the two national police institutions.
The MoU was signed by the Chief Commissioner of Ethiopian Federal Police Commission, General Demelash Gebre-Michael, and Inspector General of Rwanda National Police, Felix Namuhoranye, in the presence of their respective delegations at the Commission’s headquarters in Addis Ababa.
On the occasion, it was indicated that the partnership underscores the strong diplomatic and professional ties between Ethiopia and Rwanda.
In his remarks during the signing ceremony, General Demelash noted that the agreement will be pivotal to exchange experiences and build the capacity of young police officers at the Ethiopian Police University and the Rwandan National Police College.
He emphasized the importance of regional solidarity in addressing security concerns. “This agreement demonstrates our commitment to working together to fight transnational crime, promote information sharing, exchange best practices, and enhance capacity building,” he stated. He also announced the establishment of a joint working committee, with officers selected from his office to facilitate the implementation of the MoU.
Furthermore, Gen. Demelash highlighted the unique role of the Ethiopian Police University, the oldest police university in Africa, as a crucial resource for both institutions. “We recently inaugurated the largest Forensic Investigation and Research Center of Excellence in Africa at the Ethiopian Police University. We are committed to providing training opportunities to the Rwandan National Police at this center,” he added.
On his part, Inspector General Felix Namuhoranye stated that the Ethiopian Federal Police and the Rwandan National Police are “sister institutions united by strong bonds of collaboration and relationships.” He said, “Together, we will strengthen our capabilities to ensure peace and stability in our respective nations and across the continent.”
This MoU not only marks a milestone for the two police forces but also represents a significant contribution to fostering peace and security in the region. It serves as an exemplary initiative, promoting collaboration and mutual support among African nations to effectively tackle shared security challenges, according to Inspector General Namuhoranye.
