Addis Ababa, September 9, 2023 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Olympic Committee held the first cooperative discussion today with the Ambassador of France to Ethiopia, Remi Maréchaux, about how France can support Ethiopian athletes on their journey to the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
During the productive meeting, they had broad discussions about possible areas where France could provide assistance and support to Ethiopian Olympic teams.
The two nations share a strong Olympic spirit and we look forward to cheering on Ethiopian athletes in Paris, French Embassy in Addis Ababa stated.
The French capital, Paris, will host the 33rd edition of Olympic Games from 26 July to 11 August 2024.
Ethiopian athletes have already started their preparations for one of the biggest sports events in the world, hoping to emulate their previous shining history where it began back in the 1960 Rome Olympic Games where the legendary athlete Abebe Bikila’s stunned the world by winning the men’s marathon race while running barefoot. He also became the first African athlete to win a gold medal at Olympic Games.
Since then, many men and women Ethiopian athletes have raised the country’s flag high in different athletics event.
Paris was awarded the Games at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru, on 13 September 2017. Due to multiple withdrawals that left only Paris and Los Angeles in contention, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved a process to concurrently award the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics to the two cities.
Having previously hosted in 1900 and 1924, Paris will become the second city (after London) to host the Summer Olympics three times. Paris 2024 will mark the centenary of Paris 1924, be the sixth Olympic games hosted by France (three in summer and three in winter), and the first Olympic Games in France since the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville.
