Addis Ababa, December 28, 2019 (FBC) –The Ethiopian embassy in Saudi Arabia has processed documents of more than 11,000 domestic house workers following the signing of recruitment agreement between the two nations.
Ethiopia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed a domestic workers’ recruitment agreement in 2017 but deployment of workers began eight months ago.
“Since we started the job about 8 months ago, we have processed over 11,000 domestic house workers documents,” Abdulaziz Ahmed, ambassador of Ethiopia to Saudi Arabia, told FBC.
According to him, most of them have arrived in Saudi Arabia to start the job. They have received proper and all needed training.
Ambassador Abdulaziz further said the embassy, in partnership with Ethiopian consul in Jeddah, is trying to look for additional employment opportunities for Ethiopians.
Ethiopia had started sending domestic workers to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in August this year.
The Ethiopian Government temporarily banned its domestic workers from traveling abroad in 2013 to protect their well-being.
However, following the approval of a new law, the country signed agreements with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE and Jordan to start sending workers.
