Ethiopia to share its experiences in aviation sector at the ICAO’s GISS 2024

Addis Ababa, May 1, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopia is set to share its experiences in the aviation sector at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)’s 3rd Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS).

Ethiopian delegation headed by the Minister of Transport and Industry, Alemu Sime, is attending in ICAO’s Global Implementation Support Symposium which is being held in the Barceló Bávaro Convention Center of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

The third edition of this annual symposium is taking place from 3oth April to 2nd May 2024 in the Dominican Republic under the overarching theme of “Optimizing Aviation Capacity: Strategies for Safe Skies, Sustainable Future”.

In his opening remarks at event on Tuesday, ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano, advocated for air transport’s role as a catalyst for sustainable development. He called for greater financial and political investment to secure the safety, security, and sustainability of its expansion.

“We must commit to a global implementation support strategy that ensures the ever-increasing benefits of international civil aviation are enjoyed by all citizens of the world, regardless of nationality,” Mr. Sciacchitano declared. “Through diplomacy, technical excellence, and a shared vision of success, we have created a safe and secure air transportation system that enables responsible and sustainable growth,” he added, noting that through the combined efforts of government and industry, “our efforts, guidance, and continued support will ensure our ongoing success.”

“Sustainable development of civil aviation hinges on continuous enhancement to safety, security, and capacity – we must remain focused and avoid complacency,” Mr. Sciacchitano said. “ICAO standard-setting, oversight, assistance and implementation support, central to this week’s event, play a crucial role in achieving this.”

The annual GISS, recognized as the world’s most influential event of its kind, raises government awareness of the crucial importance of air connectivity to their strategic development. It showcases ICAO initiatives, programmes, policies and services that can help ensure a safe, sustainable, and resilient expansion of their aviation sectors.

This event aims to highlight the Organization’s latest digital tools, key initiatives, and collaborative endeavours to support aviation resilience, fostering innovation, promoting sustainable development, and providing operational solutions.

The GISS 2024 is expected to further explore the impact of air transport, tourism and capacity development as key drivers of economic resilience.
