Addis Ababa, June 7, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopia’s delegation led by Mr. Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu, National Bank Governor and Ethiopia’s BRICS Sherpa, is participating in the Third Meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas that kicked off today in Nizhny, Novgorod, Russia.
Mr. Mamo addressed the gathering, stating that in a volatile and unpredictable global economic and political environment, BRICS can serve as a stabilizing force by mobilizing countries and pooling resources to address global challenges in spirit of partnership.
The Sherpa outlined measures Ethiopia has taken to ensure its seamless integration into the BRICS framework, including the endorsement of the National BRICS Engagement Strategy by the National Inter-ministerial Coordination Committee.
He also emphasized the need for increased intra-BRICS economic relations in terms of trade, investment, and tourist flows; enhanced connectivity; and augmented development finance to support inclusive and sustainable development.
Mamo reiterated expectation that Ethiopia will join the New Development Bank as soon as possible as the Bank’s priorities align well with its developmental aspirations.
The meeting continues to deliberate on various agenda items that lay the groundwork for the upcoming BRICS Foreign Affairs Ministers’ meeting which will be held from 10-11 June 2024, as disclosed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
