Ethiopian Catholic Church, Addis Ababa City sign a 510mln Birr cooperation agreement

Addis Ababa, May 18, 2021 (FBC) – Ethiopian Catholic Church and Addis Ababa City Administration yesterday signed a 510 Million Birr cooperation agreement to jointly carry out pro-poor activities.

Cardinal of Ethiopian Catholic Church, His Eminence Berhaneyesus Surafel and Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie signed the agreement representing the Church and the city administration respectively.

Participation of partners like the Ethiopian Catholic Church is indispensable to alleviate socio economic challenges in the city and improve livelihoods of low income residents appreciating the contribution of the Addis Ababa Diocese of the church in this regard.

Socioeconomic Challenges in the city cannot be addressed with sole engagement of the government, the Deputy Mayor said, calling other stakeholders to follow examples of the Catholic Church and play their share in improving the livelihoods of the poor.

Deputy Mayor Adanech thanked the Catholic Church for its initiative to support low income residents of the capital.

His Eminence Cardinal Berhaneyesus Surafel, to his part, appreciated communal feeding programs being undertaken by the city administration.

As per the agreement, the Ethiopian Catholic Church will build a large bakery with capacity of producing 150,000 breads on daily basis, 8 kindergarterns, secondary schools and technical and vocational education training institutes to assist skilled human resource production and job creation endeavors of the city of Addis Ababa.
