Ethiopian athletics delegation returns home from Latvia

Addis Ababa, October 3, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopian athletics team delegates have concluded their adventures in the first-ever World Athletics Road Running Championship in Riga, Latvia.

Ethiopian athletes have racked up 2 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze medals. The national team has finished in second place in the world rankings with a total of seven medals.

in the inaugural World Athletics Road Race Championship, Diribe Welteji and Hagos Gebrehiwot have scooped the gold medals in the 1 mile and 5000m podiums, respectively. In the women’s road mile, Diribe outkicked her compatriot Freweyni Hailu who finished second and Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon (third) to clock a world record of 4:20.98.

In the men’s 5000m podium, Hagos Gebrehiwot sprints to glory as he overtakes his compatriot Yomif Kejelcha in the finishing straight, clocking 12:59.

After concluding its stay in the Latvian capital, the team has returned home this morning. Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, the delegation was warmly welcomed by Ethiopian Athletics Federation President, Derartu Tulu and other officials.
