Ethiopia, World Bank sign over $137m grant agreement

Addis Ababa, March 10, 2021 (FBC) –Ethiopia and the World Bank have signed a grant agreement amounting to $137.35 million for two projects.

The agreement was signed here today by Ethiopia’s State Minister of Finance Yasmin Wohabrebbi, and Ousmane Dione, World Bank Country Director for Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan and Eritrea.

Of the total, $122.5 million is an additional financing for General Education Quality Improvement Programme for Equity, (GEQIP-E), while the remaining $14.85 million is for COVID-19 Education Response Project.

The grant for GEQIP-E will also support back to school reintegration of most vulnerable groups who are more likely to permanently drop out after disruptions in schooling.

The COVID-19 Education Response Project financed by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) is envisioned to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on on Ethiopia’s education system and help recovery as schools reopen
