Ethiopia shares views on strengthening BRICS cooperation in key areas

Addis Ababa, November 27, 2024 (FBC) – At the fifth meeting of BRICS Sherpas/Sous-Sherpas which opened today in the Russian City of Yekaterinburg, Ethiopia has shared its views on strengthening cooperation among BRICS countries in key areas.

The meeting that marks the final meeting of BRICS representatives during the 2024 Chairmanship of the Russian Federation aims at taking stock of the engagements of BRICS during the year, as noted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.

In his opening remarks, the Russian Sherpa and Chair of the meeting, Mr. Sergey Rabkov highlighted the milestones of BRICS in 2024, including the landmark Kazan Summit Declaration and the BRICS Country Partner Model that paved the way for expansion of BRICS.

Mr. Rabkov emphasized that BRICS is further consolidating with the full integration of the new member countries, including Ethiopia.

Addressing the gathering, Special Policy Advisor of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Ambassador Minelik Alemu commended the Russian Federation for its able leadership during its presidency and its steadfast commitment to support the smooth integration of BRICS countries that joined in 2024.

He also shared Ethiopia’s views on strengthening cooperation among BRICS countries in the three pillar areas: political and security, financial and economic, and people-to-people ties.

The meeting proceeded in the afternoon sessions with reports presented by the Chair on the economic and financial issues and business-to-business contacts including the activities undertaken in the BRICS Business Council and BRICS Women Business Alliance.
