Ethiopia reiterates commitment to leading the way in African coffee excellence

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Adugna Debela (PhD), Director General of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, emphasized the critical role of agriculture in Africa’s economy and the significant potential of the continent’s coffee sector.

Adugna highlighted that African coffee production contributes around 12% of global coffee bean output, presenting an opportunity for job creation and increased export revenue. He noted Ethiopia’s impressive growth in coffee exports, which have surpassed one billion dollars, underscoring the potential for collective success among coffee-producing nations.

“Collaboration is essential,” Adugna stated, urging member countries to take coordinated and transparent actions to boost coffee exports while ensuring sustainable production practices. He stressed the necessity of adhering to new European Union regulations such as the EUDR and CS3D, which impact coffee exports to European markets. Ethiopia is dedicated to maintaining deforestation-free supply chains and sustainable forest management to enhance export capabilities.

The Director General also pointed to the importance of partnerships between the public and private sectors in advancing Africa’s coffee industry. His remarks reflected on successful collaborations with organizations like UNIDO, which have helped boost coffee quality and production for international markets.

He said that Ethiopia looks forward to productive discussions aimed at enhancing productivity and sustainability in African coffee.

The annual meetings bring together experts and stakeholders from various coffee-producing nations, providing a platform for collaboration and innovation in overcoming challenges faced by the sector.

The Director General further reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to leading the way in African coffee excellence.
