Addis Ababa, November 17, 2024 (FBC) – African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) convened its consultative meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the sidelines of COP29 on Sunday.
Led by AMCEN President, the Ethiopian Planning and Development Minister, Fitsum Assefa (PhD), the meeting brought together African leaders, experts, and partners to discuss critical environmental issues, climate negotiations, and sustainable development priorities for Africa.
Key agenda items at the meeting include updates from the Africa Group of Negotiators on Climate Change, Insights from the IPCC on climate science and the role of African authors and discussions on the upcoming 20th Ordinary Session of AMCEN
In her opening remarks, the AMCEN President Fitsum Assefa called for unity in representing Africa’s climate priorities during the ministerial negotiations in the second week of COP29.
“Unity is strength! Together, we can maintain the interests of Africa,” Fitsum remarked. Fitsum also reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to driving Africa’s climate agenda forward.
The meeting concluded with key outcomes: reflection on Africa’s COP29 progress in week 1, call for ministerial leadership in week 2 negotiations and venue planning for AMCEN 2025.
