Addis Ababa, February 17, 2023 (FBC) – The FDRE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen, met in his office today with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General, Antonio Vitorino.
Mentioning IOM’s provision of humanitarian assistance and shelters to IDPs as well as its support for repatriation and rehabilitation efforts, he appreciated the government of Ethiopia’s relationship with IOM.
Demeke said the government of Ethiopia is preparing a National Migration Policy that aims to create jobs, contain human trafficking and manage migration better. He asked the IOM to continue supporting the region, which suffers from manmade and natural hazards.
Antonio Vitorino stressed the need for enhanced cooperation between donors, the IOM, and governments in the region to better cope with challenges. Regarding Ethiopia’s Peace Deal, he said the IOM is ready to support the DDR process.
It is stated that the IOM chief has also met this week with the FDRE Minister of Labour and Skills, Muferihat Kamil, and held discussion to strengthen partnerships, particularly for the Minister’s chairmanship of the Regional Ministerial Forum on Labour Migration, and the strong commitment to creating jobs for youth.
