Addis Ababa, October 29, 2024 (FBC) — Ethiopia is participating in the 34th International Conference of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), which is taking place in Geneva from October 28-31, 2024.
During the conference, Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew delivered a statement emphasizing Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
While reaffirming Ethiopia’s dedication to enhancing collaboration with humanitarian organizations and meeting its obligations under the Geneva Conventions, he acknowledged the challenges to IHL posed by conflicts.
In this connection, Permanent Repre of Ethiopia to the UN Offices other Organizations in Geneva and Vienna, Ambassador Tsegab discussed the implementation of Ethiopia’s Transitional Justice Policy (TJP), aimed at promoting comprehensive justice through truth-seeking, reconciliation, and institutional reform.
He also noted the establishment of a National Dialogue Commission to address historical injustices and foster constructive dialogue within the community.
This year’s conference is particularly notable as it coincides with the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, underscoring the continued importance of their fundamental values in protecting human dignity in the face of evolving armed conflicts.
The conference theme, “Navigate uncertainty, strengthen humanity,” highlights the urgent need for enhanced cooperation in tackling global humanitarian issues.
An Ethiopian delegation from the Ethiopian Red Cross Society is also participating in the Conference.
