Addis Ababa, December 13, 2023 (FBC) – Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister said that Ethiopia has made a significant progress in fulfilling its 2019 Global Refugees Forum commitment in areas of job creation, education, energy, and environment protection.
Speaking at the Second Global Refugee Forum that kicked off in Geneva, Switzerland, Mr. Demeke announced six new pledges which would address the adverse impacts of climate change through planting seedlings and providing alternative energy sources, and transforming two refugee camps into urban settlements, among others.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s long standing determination to welcome people seeking refuge.
Ethiopia is hosting over one million refugees, who live integrated with various host communities, per MFA Ethiopia.
