Ethiopia launches a 5-year National Blue Economy strategy

Addis Ababa, December 19, 2022 (FBC) – The Ministry of Transport and Logistics-Ethiopia (MoLT) announced on Monday the launch of National Blue Economic Strategy in collaboration with Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Dagmawit Moges, MoTL Minister, stated that the development of a national Blue Economy strategy and implementation of the same is one of the core initiatives identified in Ethiopia’s ten years perspective plan and national logistics strategy.

The Minister confirmed that the Ministry of Transport and Logistics along with respective agencies is working to achieve the goals of the strategy specially focused on excelling in shipping services, port development, seafarers training, ship registration, and other maritime services.

This strategy, according to Dagmawit, will also create an opportunity for Ethiopia to harness the benefits of inland water bodies (rivers, lakes, and wetlands). This will contribute to the realization of creating prosperous and equitable economic development.

“Our National Blue Economy Strategy has addressed a number of matters that promote action-oriented interventions that place people and the Blue Economy resources at the center of sustainable development”, she said via Twitter.

The MoTL Minister indicated that the strategy further promotes collaboration for sustainable partnerships and projects in the various sectors of the Blue Economy, and interventions to mobilize finances from public and private sources.

The newly launched National Blue Economy strategy is projected to run from 2023 to 2027, the Minister further confirmed.
