Addis Ababa, September 22, 2022 (FBC) – Bacha Debele Buta, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Kenya and Permanent Representative to UNEP, UN-Habitat and UN Offices in Nairobi (UNON), said Ethiopia is committed to further strengthening its multifaceted cooperation with the UN.
Among other spheres Ethiopia is committed to buttress its cooperation with UN on environmental issues, climate change, urbanization, and global peace and security as the champion of multilateralism and one of the top five troop contributing countries to several UN peacekeeping missions.
As he presented his Letter of Credence to Zainab Hawa Bangura, Under-Secretary-General and the Director General of the UN Offices in Nairobi (UNON), Ambassador Bacha calls on the international community to support Ethiopian government peace efforts.
The Ambassador briefed the DG Ethiopia’s pivotal role at the UN and current affairs in Ethiopia.
He further noted, the government of Ethiopia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, is steadfast in supporting the concerted efforts to tackle climate change and to enhance climate resilience through initiatives such as the Green Legacy Initiative.
Speaking of the ongoing war in northern Ethiopia, the envoy urged the UN and the international community at large to support the peace efforts of the Ethiopian government and to put pressure on the terrorist TPLF to renounce hostilities and come to the negotiation table.
He underlined that Ethiopia’s destabilization is detrimental to the peace and security and development of the Horn of Africa region.
On her part, DG Zainab Hawa Bangura thanked the envoy for the timely briefing and stressed the fact that the UN is closely monitoring the current situation in Ethiopia, including the AU-brokered peace process under the leadership of the High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.
She also reiterated UNON’s commitment to closely working with the Embassy in championing regional and global issues of mutual interest.
