Addis Ababa, July 11, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopia has demonstrated a successful and effective participation in the activities of BRICS, which objectively aims and contributes to the construction of multipolar world, during the past six months that have elapsed since Ethiopia joined the association, Ambassador Evgeny Terekhin told ENA.
“I can strongly declare that the six months that have elapsed since Ethiopia joined BRICS have already demonstrated a successful and effective participation of Addis Ababa in the activities of this association, which objectively aims and contributes to the construction of multipolar world.”
Ethiopia’s full-fledged membership in BRICS during Russia’s chairmanship of the association is seen as a significant boost to cooperation, he said, adding that Russia’s leadership this year has facilitated Ethiopia’s integration, and their active participation has opened doors for even stronger collaboration.
“Let me remind this year our country is chairing the BRICS Association and it is very symbolical that the same year Ethiopia became the full-fledged member of this association and it is one of our primary tasks as a chairing country to help the new member countries to harmoniously join different formats of participation in BRICS association.”
According to the ambassador, while preserving traditions and guided by the experience accumulated by BRICS in previous years, Russia is taking necessary steps to facilitate a harmonious integration of new participants, including Ethiopia, into a numerous formats of the association’s activities.
During the six months that have elapsed since Ethiopia joined BRICS, the country has already demonstrated a successful and effective participation, Ambassador Terekhin underlined.
For him, strengthening cooperation in the field of politics and security is one of the three pillars of BRICS activities.
As a special emphasis is given on increasing the foreign policy coordination of the BRICS, member states are jointly searching for effective responses to challenges and threats to international and regional security and stability.
For instance, on June 10 of this year, BRICS ministers of foreign affairs met in Russia, issued and adopted a joint statement, Ambassador sated, adding that Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party also took part in the BRICS Political Parties forum in Russia.
“At the end of the four-day forum, a joint coalition of 24 points was published, which also reflects Ethiopia’s position on various contemporary topics. I believe that Ethiopia’s participation in such events certainly contributes to the expansion of its political opportunity and growth of authority on the world stage, strengthening multilateral cooperation in key areas of the current international agenda,” he elaborated.
Now, the BRICS have passed the halfway point of the Russian chairmanship; and there is sufficient confidence that the October summit in Kazan is approaching. It will be the 16th summit of the BRICS association with significant outcome.
He hopes that based on the results of the summit, the members will be able to add more detailed goals and objectives for deepening cooperation with Ethiopia and other members of the association.
“At the moment, the main focus is made on finding ways to facilitate mutual trade, economic projects, and investments,” the ambassador pointed out.
The BRICS countries have also prioritized the need to search for alternative payment systems and transitioning to the use of national currencies in mutual payments. it was learned.
Russia will continue to create mechanisms applicable to the entire BRICS to work bilaterally with all partners to expand such practices.
