Addis Ababa February 21, 2023 (FBC) – On its recent overview of the situation of Children’s Rights in Africa and its ongoing activities, the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) disclosed that Ethiopia is in line with the African Charter on the rights and welfare of the child.
In an exclusive interview with Fana Broadcasting Corporate, Ayalew Getachew, senior child protection officer at ACERWC said that the country as mandated by the signed charter is complying with the African Charter on the rights and welfare of the child.
Ayalew said that since Ethiopia ratified the charter in 2002 the country is submitting its periodical reports to the experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) that shows the implementation and status of the country in the provision of the protection of children in all the right to education, health, life, supply and development, refugee, and special protection of children.
The senior officer added that complying with the charter lets the country to undertake protection of children’s rights benefiting them to exercise their rights in the country.
He added that based on the last year submission by Ethiopia ACERWC’s committee considered and issued positive feedbacks and recommended on concerns related to Children’s Rights in the country.
It is to be recalled that on the sideline of the 36th ordinary session of the African union summit, African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) briefed the Media on Overview of the Situation of Children’s Rights in Africa and its ongoing activities.
Briefing the media, Chairperson of the ACERWC and the Special Rapporteur on Children on the Move, Joseph Ndayisenga has called on the African Union member states to protect the rights and Welfare of the Children in continent.
He urged AU member states to double their resilience in protecting the Rights and Welfare of the Children in Africa.
In its presentation Josep Ndayisenga indicated that State Parties to the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child are obliged to report to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child on the status of the implementation of the provisions of the Charter in their respective countries.
