Ethiopia commits to financing, technology-intensive education: Minister

Addis Ababa, October 23, 2020 (FBC) –Minister of Education Dr Getahun Mekuria said Ethiopia is committed to both financing to education and technology-intensive education.

He made the remark at the extraordinary session of the Global Education Meeting (GEM) convened by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and held on line.

According to the Minister, the two strong voices of the meeting were finance to education and technology-intensive education. “Ethiopia commits to both,” he said.

During the meeting, Heads of State, UN Executives, Education Ministers of Member States also re-committed themselves to education in post-COVID-19, he added.

They agreed on global priority actions for educational recovery, and to uphold commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its SDG 4.

The countries also pledged to invest in inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning to reduce the impact of COVID-19, estimated at up to $200 billion per year in poor countries if no action is taken.

They further expressed commitment to safely reopen educational institutions through prioritizing the health and safety of students and educators.
