Addis Ababa, October 25, 2024 (FBC) – Foreign Affairs Minister Gedion Timothewos highlighted Ethiopia’s strategic participation in the recent BRICS Summit held in Kazan, where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and his ministerial team represented the nation. The minister emphasized that Ethiopia effectively utilized this platform to bolster its global standing.
He remarked that the diplomatic engagements and political discussions during the summit, along with meetings with leaders from various countries, significantly contributed to advancing Ethiopia’s national interests and elevating its role in global matters.
Gedion noted that the summit resulted in important resolutions on economic cooperation, environmental protection, and reforms within the United Nations Security Council. He emphasized Ethiopia’s role in articulating both its own positions and those of the African continent in these discussions.
The minister also mentioned productive bilateral talks with several nations on the sidelines of the summit, during which BRICS partner countries expressed interest in gaining Ethiopia’s support for membership.
Furthermore, he reiterated that these discussions served to inform other nations of Ethiopia’s regional significance and core interests. During the summit, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) also engaged in conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, focusing on strengthening the bilateral relationship and identifying areas for future collaboration.
