Ethiopia calls on countries to join hands in combating climate change

Addis Ababa, September 4, 2023 (FBC) – The Minister of Planning and Development of Ethiopia, Fitsum Assefa (PhD), is participating the African Climate Summit taking place in Nairobi, Kenya.

 

In her address at the Summit, Fitsum stated that climate Change is among the major challenges that are affecting the growth trajectories of countries like Ethiopia.

 

The climate-fuelled problems are a reality, she said, calling for serious actions to strengthen climate action and climate financing to deter the adverse effects of climate change.

 

Fitsum stated that climate change is currently causing displacement in Ethiopia and leading them to migration, calling countries to join hands in fighting the problem.

She mentioned the severe drought condition that Ethiopia has been experiencing in the last five years as an example of the severe damage that climate change is causing in the country.

Fistsum noted that climate change is a national agenda that has been given high attention by the government of Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has put in place clear mechanisms such as the Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy to expedite the fight against climate change.

The Minister stated that Ethiopia is working with determination to combat the severe impacts of climate change such as displacement and migration.

Explaining the success of the Green Legacy Initiative, Fitsum stated that Ethiopia is working with great determination to deal with the impact of climate change so as to prevent its adverse effects.

During the forum, countries have been urged support the implementation of the The Kampala Ministerial Declaration on Migration, Environment, and Climate Change (KDMECC), where all African countries are urged to join and pledge their support.

The issue of climate change is an issue for all countries to work together on, she underscored, calling all countries and organizations to cooperate in financing the implementation of KDMECC.

African Climate Summit will continue until 6 September, 2023.
