Addis Ababa, July 4, 2024 (FBC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that more than 30,000 new pre-schools have been built in Ethiopia and school meals service has been provided to pupils in these schools since his government took office.
Prime Minister Abiy revealed this figure while presenting the federal government performance report of the 2016 E.C fiscal year at the 36th regular session of the House of People’s Representatives. On the occasion, he also responded to the questions raised by the members of the parliament.
According to the Prime Minister, the government is working to ensure the quality of education from the lower level of education.
In that regard, over 30,000 new pre-schools have been built over the past six years in Ethiopia to bring about quality education.
“To improve education quality, Ethiopia built 30,000 new preschools and provided school meals. A new school for the blind promotes inclusivity.”
He mentioned that school meals services are being expanded in addition to building schools.
He mentioned that the country has also built a modern school for the blind for the inclusiveness of the education system and said that it has been opened for service.
On the other hand, he mentioned that a single university was not built after he took office, and pointed out that the focus is only ensuring quality education. “No new universities have been built amid national changes; focus now is on enhancing existing university standards.”
Prime Minister Abiy mentioned that before the current government came to power six years ago, the total annual budget for universities was about 40 billion birr, but now it is about 60 billion.
